Johannes Theodat

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johannes Theodat (also Johannes Diodato or Owanes Astouatzatur ) (* around 1640 in Istanbul , † 1725 in Vienna ) was an Armenian or Greek merchant and courier . He was the owner of the first Viennese coffee house .

After Emperor Leopold I had expelled the Jews in Vienna from 1669 , the silver supply for the imperial coin collapsed. Since local traders could not take over the delivery, Diodatos Handelsgesellschaft was hired. He was in Turkey from March to October 1671 , but was also unable to ensure that the mint ran regularly.

On January 17, 1685, as a thank you for his courier services, he was granted the privilege of being the only trader in the city to sell coffee as a drink for 20 years , and opened the first Viennese coffee house in his home on Haarmarkt, now Rotenturmstrasse 14.

When he was unable to rehabilitate himself after an espionage affair surrounding the siege of Belgrade under the command of Prince Eugen , he moved to Venice and four Armenians took over the coffee house business.

In 2004 the Johannes-Diodato-Park in Vienna- Wieden was named after him.
