Johannes Tolhopf

Johannes Tolhopf (also Johannes Tolophus , Johann Tolhopfer or Janus Tolophus ) (* 1429 in Kemnath ; † April 28, 1503 in Regensburg ) was a German humanist , rector at the University of Ingolstadt and canon of Regensburg. He was also court astrologist of the Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus .

Life

In the summer of 1465, Johannes Tolhopf enrolled at the University of Leipzig in order to acquire a Baccalaureus there in 1468/69 and the Magister artium in 1470/71 .

Johannes Tolhopf is mentioned for the first time on March 18, 1472 as a professor in the artist faculty at the University of Ingolstadt, which was founded in the same year. In 1473 he became the second rector in the history of the university. In the summer of 1474 he appeared again at the University of Leipzig.

Johannes Tolhopf achieved great fame as an astronomer and astrologer . So he made for Pope Sixtus IV. One on Rome -aligned planets panel for 1476. 1480 was he then court astrologer of the Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus in oven and verfertigte be Stellarium cum praefatione ad Mathiam lively Hungariae . In the same year he was raised to the nobility by Matthias Corvinus and rewarded with various church income.

Later he taught canon law in Regensburg and was canon there . He then became a pastor in Forchheim . He was in lively correspondence with Conrad Celtis . He promoted this and got him the rectorate of the Regensburg Cathedral School. His adaptations to the late antique poet Prudentius are considered lost. He was also active in the field of astronomy .
