Johannes Touton

Johannes Touton (* July 23, 1733 in Traben-Trarbach ; † December 30, 1800 in ibid.) Was a German educator and scholar.

Life

Johannes Touton was a son of the married couple Philip Joachim Touton and his wife Maria Agnes, geb. Skin from Traben-Trarbach. After finishing his school education at Trarbacher Gymnasium, Touton studied philosophy and theology . Subsequently, in 1755, he received his first job as vice-principal at the Trarbacher Gymnasium. Touton, who received a lot of attention because of his erudition, excelled particularly in the teaching of classical education, in that he a. a. conveyed the pedagogy of Jean-Jacques Rousseau . Touton, who was the last rector of the Trarbacher Gymnasium from 1766 to 1800, received Karl II August from the Duke of Pfalz-Zweibrücken in 1780 the title of professor.

At the grammar school in Trarbach, Touton had designed a curriculum that provided for the teaching of Latin and German prose . On April 5, 1781, he published a “ Brief message about the current state of the Gymnasium in Trarbach, together with its previous fate and circumstances ”. With the help of his nephew Daniel Touton, Touton was able to maintain the principle of the Illustre grammar school, which was suppressed by the French from 1794, until his death in 1800. Adam Storck , who was a former student of Touton, published in 1818 in his honor with his work “ Representations from the Prussian Rhine and Moselle Country ”, a literary memorial for his former teacher.
