Johannes Trautloft

Johannes "Hannes" Trautloft (born March 3, 1912 in Großobringen , † January 1, 1995 in Bad Wiessee ) was a German Air Force officer, most recently as Lieutenant General of the Federal Air Force .

Life

His flying career began with a civilian pilot training at the commercial aviation school in Schleissheim . On October 15, 1932, he joined the 15th Infantry Regiment of the Reichswehr as an officer candidate . He then completed in the Soviet Union his training as a fighter pilot at the flight school Lipetsk . As a member of the Condor Legion , he took part in the Spanish Civil War. There he first flew a Heinkel He 51 biplane . With this type of aircraft he got 4 kills. In the further course of the civil war, he was responsible for front-line testing of the Messerschmitt Bf 109 in the pilot squadron 88 . In 1937 he was one of the three pilots who won the international Alpine sightseeing flight in the triple patrol category.

Before the start of the war , he was a squadron captain in Jagdgeschwader 51 and from September 19, 1939 to August 24, 1940 group commander of III./JG 51. He played a major role in building up Jagdgeschwader 54 (Grünherz) . By the end of the war he had 58 victories in the air.

Trautloft was Deputy Inspector of the Federal Air Force and Chief of Staff in the Bundeswehr in 1961 . Most recently in the service position as commanding general of the Air Force Group Command South, Trautloft retired from active service as Lieutenant General in 1970 .
