Johannes Walteri from Sinten

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johannes Walteri von Sinten (* Zinten ; † 1397 ) (also Zinten ) was from 1374 to 1393 as Johann IV. Archbishop of Riga , then from 1393 to 1397 he was titular patriarch of Alexandria and administrator of Tournai .

Life

He came from the town of Zinten in Prussia, worked as a town clerk in Riga and in 1371 was a notary in Riga.

Probably before 1371 he was canon and from 1372 prior of the cathedral chapter as well as representative of Bishop Siegfried von Blomberg in his absence.

The Pope installed John to succeed his predecessor. His pontificate was marked by violent disputes with the Livonian Teutonic Order .

The order tried to refute Johann's claims to the Riga Abbey and its possessions with forged documents. The order succeeded in winning over the bishop's feudal men. This fled to Lübeck . Various attempts at negotiations, including by King Wenzel , failed. Johann then turned to the Pope. This opened a new procedure in 1393. The order offered the Pope 11,500 gold guilders as lease if he would appoint a member of the order to be archbishop. The order was successful and Johann was replaced as Archbishop by Johannes von Wallenrode , the Grand Master's brother. He himself was resigned to the titular office of the Latin Patriarch of Alexandria .
