Parish Church of St. John

The Neukalener Johanneskirche is a church of the parish Neukalen-Schorrentin in the Mecklenburg Lake District . The community, to which the village church Schorrentin is also assigned, belongs to the Rostock provost in the Mecklenburg parish of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany (Northern Church) .

Building description

The church is a single-nave Gothic brick building that was built in the first half of the 15th century. The nave is 40 meters long and 13 meters wide and is closed off to the east by a three-sided choir closure. The flat ceiling extends over the choir and nave without interruption . On the south side and the two adjoining parts of the eastern end there is a four-leaf frieze. Late Gothic panels can be found on the tower, which has a steep helmet with four pointed gables. An inscription on the tower states that it was built in 1439.

Interior

The altar and pulpit are carvings from the Renaissance period . The altar was made in 1610. It is almost as wide and as high as the east side of the church. The figures Adam and Eve have been taken from an older, Gothic triptych , a predella with three paintings was added. These show Gethsemane , the Lord's Supper and the Carrying of the Cross. There are also figures of the Twelve Apostles , under each of which are sections of the apostolic creed in Low German . The pulpit was made in the 17th century. A pietà from the 15th century is also preserved.
