The Roman Catholic Johanneskirche Oberfalkenstein am Pfaffenberg (municipality of Obervellach) was formerly the chapel of Oberfalkenstein Castle and is now a branch church of the Obervellach parish . The church consecrated to John the Baptist is located near the Tauern Railway above the Falkenstein Bridge .

Building description

The church is a small, towering building from the 18th century. In the southern part of the castle chapel there is still a Romanesque wall core below the current church floor level. Inside the church is an apse-free hall with a two-storey wooden gallery. The ceiling painting shows the baptism of Christ . In 1990 two apostle crosses from around 1700 were uncovered.

Facility

The baptism of Christ can be seen on the high altar from 1772. The carved figures depict Zacharias and Elisabeth , the parents of Johannes. The side altar of Mary was built around 1700. The four evangelists and the adoration of the child are depicted on the pulpit from the second quarter of the 18th century .

A panel of St. Barbara belonging to the church from around 1500 and a late Gothic St. John's head are in safekeeping.
