John Agar

John Agar (born January 31, 1921 in Chicago , Illinois , † April 7, 2002 in Burbank , California ) was an American actor.

life and work

John Agar was born the oldest of four children. His father, John Agar Sr., a slaughterhouse worker, died in 1942. John Agar served in the Air Force during World War II . In 1946 he left her with the rank of sergeant . In 1945 he married Shirley Temple , whom he had met as a soldier - he had been assigned to her escort. With her he later appeared in the film Fort Apache (1948). The film was his debut after acting lessons arranged by David O. Selznick . Selznick had signed Agar after leaving the army. In 1950, Agar and Temple were divorced again. In 1951 Agar married again.

In the course of his film career he appeared several times on the side of John Wayne and became friends with him. The first of these appearances were in the films Sands of Iwo Jima and Der Teufelshauptmann (both 1949). He became a B-movie star in the 1950s and starred in many of those films. For example, in the science fiction classic Tarantula (1955) in the role of the country doctor Dr. Matt Hastings , who tracks down a giant tarantula . Agar was also often seen as a guest on television series in the 1960s and 1970s.

The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films honored him with the Life Career Award in 1981 .

Agar died on April 7, 2002 in Burbank, California, of complications from emphysema. He was 81 years old. He was buried next to his wife at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, California. He left behind his three children, four grandchildren and two brothers.
