John Gordon "Jock" Aitken (born September 17, 1897 in Glasgow , † December 1, 1967 ibid) was a Scottish football player . The greatest success of the left winger , who played games for English and Scottish clubs during his career, was winning the Scottish Cup with FC Kilmarnock in 1929 .

Athletic career

Aitken attended John Watson's School in Edinburgh , where he was initially more inclined to rugby than football. He joined the army shortly after graduating, and when he returned from there he began technical training. He took his first footballing steps at various clubs in and around Glasgow , including St Anthony's, St Roch's, Third Lanark and, most recently, FC Clyde until 1921 . In May 1921 Aitken joined the English second division club FC Bury , for which he played a total of 80 league games and scored eight goals. After he was promoted to the top English league with Bury in 1924 , he moved to the Third Division North for Southport FC .

In Southport he stayed just one year, as in his following stations Crewe Alexandra , Norwich City and Northampton Town . The rumor persisted in Southport that the two Glasgow-born wingers Jock and Fergie Aitken were brothers; the two weren't even related to each other. In 1928 Aitken returned to Scotland and at FC Kilmarnock he then celebrated the greatest successes of his career. When he won the Cup in 1929, he scored the first goal in the final against Glasgow Rangers (2-0) and three years later he was back against the same opponent in the final, which was lost after two games. Another high point in his career was the game against Dundee United (8-0) in December 1931 , when he scored five goals for "Killie" - although he seldom appeared as a scorer. At FC St. Mirren and later FC Morton , Aitken ended his sporting career in the 1933/34 season.

Aitken worked as a warehouse clerk in the Glasgow shipyards until he retired at age 65, before he died five years later.
