Sir John Brian Pendry (born July 4, 1943 ) is an English physicist .

Live and act

Pendry is known for his work on surface structures and the interaction with electrons and photons in solid state physics. He published more than 200 scientific papers . He published on plasmons , metamaterials (a term he coined in the 1990s), and Extraordinary Optical Transmission (discovered by Thomas Ebbesen ).

From 1975 to 1981 he worked at Daresbury Laboratory, Cheshire. After being appointed professor in 1981 , he worked at Imperial College London . He was head of the physics department (1998-2001) and director of physical sciences (2001-2002).
