John Joseph Bonetti (born June 12, 1928 in Brooklyn , New York City , † June 28, 2008 in Houston , Texas ) was a professional American poker player . He won three bracelets in the World Series of Poker .

Poker career

Career

Bonetti didn't start playing poker until he was 54 and has won three bracelets at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas during his career . He was also twice third in the main event of the tournament series. At the end of January 2004, he finished seventh in the Main Event of the World Poker Tour in Tunica and won more than $ 85,000 in prize money . Overall, Bonetti earned more than four million dollars in prize money with poker in live tournaments. He was also considered one of Phil Hellmuth's most important mentors .

Bonetti lived in Houston and was married with three sons. He has been fighting prostate cancer and a spinal cord tumor since 1992 ; He died in June 2008 at the age of 80.
