John Buehler

John Buehler , born as Johann Bühler (born August 19, 1831 in Dornhan , Württemberg ; † May 8, 1899 in Chicago , Illinois ), was an American banker of German origin. He was a director of the State Bank in Chicago and a Senator for the State of Illinois.

Life

John Buehler was born on August 19, 1831 in Dornhan, the son of a weaver. In Fluorn he completed an apprenticeship as a shoemaker . He then worked in Switzerland .

He emigrated to America around 1853/54. He came to Chicago in April 1855 via New York and Philadelphia. There he worked as an employee in a shoe shop, which he later took over. He then worked as a landlord and grocer before entering the brewery business and the grain trade. At the beginning of the 1870s, he and other partners finally founded a bank that became one of the most respected credit institutions in Chicago. During this time he also worked as a real estate speculator.

Bühler also made a name for himself through various donations and loans for infrastructure projects and in the social field in his hometown of Dornhan. With his donations, among other things, a water supply, the construction of a secondary school (today the John Bühler secondary school Dornhan) and the reduction of poverty in the village could be realized.

On May 8, 1899, John Buehler died in Chicago after a long illness of cancer.

In 1889 he was made an honorary citizen by the city of Dornhan .
