John C. Tully

John Charles Tully (born May 17, 1942 in New York City ) is an American chemist who deals with physical chemistry and theoretical chemistry .

Tully graduated from Yale University with a bachelor's degree in 1964 and received his doctorate in chemistry from the University of Chicago in 1968 (Photoionization of and electron scattering by atoms and molecules). He was a post-graduate student at the University of Colorado and Yale University. From 1970 he was at Bell Laboratories , where from 1985 he headed the Materials Chemistry Research Department. In 1996 he became a professor of chemistry, physics and applied physics at Yale University. He is Arthur T. Kemp Professor of Chemistry and Director of the Center for Research on Interface Structures and Phenomena (CRISP).

Among other things, he deals with the simulation of chemical on metal surfaces and the development of theoretical methods such as mixed classical-quantum mechanical dynamics, dynamics with path integrals , density functional theory with constraints and molecular dynamics with electronic transitions .

In 1982 he received the Distinguished Technical Staff Award from Bell Laboratories. He received the Peter Debye Award in 1995, the American Chemical Society's Madison Marshall Award in 1999, the Ira Remsen Award in 2008 and the American Chemical Society Award in Theoretical Chemistry in 2004 . In 1980 he received an honorary doctorate in Bordeaux. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences , the American Association for the Advancement of Science , American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1997), the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering, the International Academy of Quantum Molecular Science and is a Fellow of the American Physical Society . In 2005 he was a Guggenheim Fellow . In 2020 he received the NAS Award in Chemical Sciences .
