John Cameron Monjo (born July 17, 1931 in Stamford , Connecticut , United States ) is an American diplomat.

Career

Monjo graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1953. From 1953 to 1959, he served in the United States Navy .

From 1957 Monjo worked for the Foreign Service. From 1958 to 1961 he served as State Department Political officer in Phnom Penh, Cambodia . Monjo then spent several years in Japan : until 1962 as State Department Commercial officer in Tokyo , from 1964 to 1965 also in Tokyo as State Department Economic Officer and until 1967 as Official Political Officer at the United States Department of the Army in Naha , Okinawa . Until 1969 Monjo worked in the Japanese Affairs Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as an international relations officer. At the same time he was from 1961 to 1971 with the Undersecretary for Political Affairs State Department Special Assistant . In Jakarta ( Indonesia ) Monjo was State Department Political officer from 1972 to 1976 and then in Casablanca ( Morocco ) State Department Principal officer until 1978. This was followed by a position as US State Department Country director in the Foreign Ministry for Philippine Affairs (1978-1979 ).

In 1979 Monjo became Deputy Ambassador to South Korea , from November 1981 to February 1983 Chargé d'Affaires ad interim at the Embassy in Indonesia, from 1983 to 1985 Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Office for East Asia and Pacific Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and there from 1987 to 1989 Senior Deputy Assistant Secretary .

At the same time, Monjo was US ambassador to Malaysia from 1987 to 1989 . This was followed by the office of ambassador in Indonesia. The appointment took place on May 22, 1989, his accreditation he handed over on May 31, 1989. In January 1990 Monjo traveled to the Indonesian-occupied East Timorese Dili to investigate allegations of torture and arrest against the occupying forces. There were protests against the Indonesian occupation in front of the Hotel Turismo where the ambassador was staying. Monjo finished his service in Jakarta on July 18, 1992. His last post was Ambassador to Pakistan from 1992 to 1995.
