John painter Collier (born January 28, 1850 in London , † April 11, 1934 ibid) was a British writer and painter in the style of the Pre-Raphaelites .

Life and family

Collier was one of the most prominent portrait painters of his time and came from an artistically and politically active family. His grandfather John Collier was a Quaker and MP, his father (also MP) was Attorney General , member of the Privy Council and 1st Baron Monkswell , but also a member of the Royal Society of British Artists . Collier's older brother, 2nd Baron Monkswell, was Assistant Secretary of War and Chairman of the London County Council .

The family was closely associated with the important Huxley family of scientists. John Collier married two of the daughters of Professor Thomas Henry Huxley , President of the Royal Society . He was also " on terms of intimate friendship " of the writer Leonard Huxley .

Collier's first wife was Marian Huxley (1859–1887), who was also a successful painter. After the birth of their daughter Joyce, she suffered from depression . She was due for treatment in Paris, but contracted pneumonia and died in 1887. Joyce later became a painter of portrait miniatures and a member of the Royal Society of Miniature Painters .

Shortly thereafter, Collier married Marian's younger sister Ethel (1866–1941). This was forbidden in England until 1907, so the wedding had to take place in Norway. With Ethel, Collier had two children, another daughter and a son, Sir Laurence Collier (1890-1976), who was British Ambassador to Norway in 1941-51.

education

Collier went to school at Eton College , then studied with Sir Edward Poynter at the Slade School of Art , in Paris with Jean-Paul Laurens and in Munich. In addition, Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema and Sir John Everett Millais were supporters of Collier and influenced his later work. From Millais, for example, he took over the working method of placing the sitter next to the portrait that was being created, viewing both from a distance, and then continuing the painting.

Collier was one of the 24 founding members of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters , of which he became Vice President. He was also a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters . He exhibited no fewer than 130 paintings in the Royal Academy of Arts and 165 in the Royal Society of Portrait Painters .

His didactic work includes The Primer of Art (1882), A Manual of Oil Painting (1886) and The Art of Portrait Painting (1905). In 1920 he was awarded the Order of the British Empire .
