John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman is a jazz album by John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman that was recorded and released in 1963.
background
Coltrane and Hartman had known each other since their days together in Dizzy Gillespie's band in the late 1940s. Nevertheless, Hartman was initially skeptical after Bob Thiele had suggested Coltrane's proposal to record a joint album, as he did not see himself as a jazz singer and did not believe that he and Coltrane would complement each other musically. However, Thiele succeeded in convincing Hartman to watch Coltrane's performances in the New York jazz club Birdland and to consider whether he could identify starting points for a collaboration.
Hartman took the advice, and after the performance was over, Coltrane, pianist McCoy Tyner, and Hartman worked on a few songs. They had agreed on ten songs for the recording session on March 7, 1963, on the way to the studio they heard Lush Life with Nat King Cole on the radio, and Hartman decided spontaneously that they would record that song. The photographs were all on the same day in the Van Gelder Studios in Englewood Cliffs ( New Jersey included). With the exception of You Are Too Beautiful , in which the drummer Elvin Jones lost a drumstick, each song was only recorded once (on tracks 2, 3 and 6 Coltrane sparingly added an accompanying part later). In addition to the six tracks released on record, Afro Blue has been recorded but not yet released. The album immediately became a jazz classic, and the renditions of Lush Life and They Say It's Wonderful are considered definitive.
reception
The album received only positive reviews. Scott Yanow wrote on Allmusic :
“John Coltrane's matchup with singer Johnny Hartman, although quite unexpected, works extremely well. Hartman was in prime form ... and his versions of "Lush Life" and "My One and Only Love" have never been topped. Coltrane's playing throughout the session is beautiful, sympathetic, and still exploratory… .. At only half an hour, one wishes there were twice as much music, but what is here is classic, essential for all jazz collections. ”
“John Coltrane's interaction with singer Johnny Hartman, although quite unexpected, works very well. Hartman was in great shape ... and his versions of "Lush Life" and "My One and Only Love" were never outdone. Coltrane plays great, compassionate and yet exploring throughout the recording. With only half an hour you would like twice as much music, but what is on offer is classic, essential for all jazz collections. "
