John David Weeks (born October 11, 1943 ) is an American theoretical chemist ( statistical physics , theory of liquids , phase transitions ).

Life

John D. Weeks studied physics at Harvard University from September 1961 to June 1965 . He then went to the University of Chicago , where he received his doctorate in chemical physics in 1969. As a postdoctoral fellow, he worked from September 1969 for two years at the University of California, San Diego and then for one year at the University of Cambridge . From 1972 to 1990 worked in research at Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill (New Jersey) . In 1990 he became a professor at the University of Maryland (Institute for Physical Science and Technology and Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry), from 1995 with the rank of Distinguished Professor.

As a postdoctoral fellow in San Diego, he published a fundamental work with David Chandler and Hans C. Andersen on the role of repulsive forces in the calculation of the equilibrium properties of simple liquids (with Lennard-Jones potential ). Their disorder theory approach was initially controversial, but was later accepted and entered the literature as WCA theory ( WCA theory ). Her publication in the Journal of Chemical Physics is one of the most cited in the field of fluid theory.

As a single author and in collaboration with colleagues, he has published a large number of articles on fluids and ionic liquids , on hydrophobic interactions , on static and dynamic properties of solid interfaces and thin layers , on density functional theory , pattern formation and crystal growth .

He became a Fellow of the American Physical Society in 1984, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2000, a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 2009 and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2011 . In 1990 he received the Joel Henry Hildebrand in the Theoretical and Experimental Chemistry of Liquids from the American Chemical Society .
