John E. Sheridan

John Edward Sheridan (born September 15, 1902 in Waterbury , Connecticut , †  November 12, 1987 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician . Between 1939 and 1947 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Sheridan attended the public schools of his home country and then studied until 1925 at the University of Pennsylvania . After a subsequent law degree at Temple University and his license to practice law in 1931, he began working in this profession in his hometown. Between 1934 and 1937 he was the Assistant Attorney General of Pennsylvania. In 1937 he was a member of a tax reform commission in Philadelphia County . In 1938 and 1939 he was a legal advisor to the Delaware River Bridge Commission . Politically, Sheridan joined the Democratic Party . From 1932 to 1944 he took part as a delegate at all four Democratic National Conventions , each of which Franklin D. Roosevelt was nominated as a presidential candidate.

After the death of Representative J. Burrwood Daly , Sheridan was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the by-election due for the fourth seat of Pennsylvania , where he took up his new mandate on November 7, 1939. After three re-elections, he could remain in Congress until January 3, 1947 . By 1941, the last of the Roosevelt government's New Deal laws were passed there. Since 1941, the work of the Congress was also shaped by the events of the Second World War and its consequences. In 1946, Sheridan renounced another congressional candidacy.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, he worked as a lawyer again. Between 1954 and 1962 he was a colonel in the United States Air Force . From 1954 to 1965 Sheridan served on the district legislative review committee. He was also Consul General for Monaco in Philadelphia . He died in Philadelphia on November 12, 1987 and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery , Virginia .

Remarks

  1. However, his status in this branch of service is stated in the Congress biography as retired . His headstone also states that he served in the American Air Force in both World War II and the Korean War. Such military service is not mentioned in the other sources.
