John Egerton (Bishop)

Rt. Rev. John Egerton, Bishop of Durham

John Egerton (born November 30, 1721 in London , † June 18, 1787 in London) was an Anglican bishop .

Life

Egerton was the eldest son of the Rev. Hon. Henry Egerton († 1746), Bishop of Hereford , who in turn was a younger son of John Egerton, 3rd Earl of Bridgewater . His mother was Lady Elizabeth Adriana Bentinck, daughter of Johann Wilhelm Bentinck, 1st Earl of Portland .

He was at Eton College educated and studied at Oriel College of Oxford University . In 1756 he completed his studies as Doctor of Civil Law . In 1745 he became a deacon and priest ordained .

In 1749 he was appointed court chaplain to King George II and in 1750 he was appointed Dean of Hereford by his father .

In 1756 he was ordained bishop of Bangor . In 1768 he was transferred to the Diocese of Lichfield and Coventry and finally in 1771 to the Principality of Durham . He had turned down the offer of primate of the Church of Ireland .

Marriages and offspring

On November 21, 1748 he married his first cousin Lady Anne Gray, daughter and co-heir of Henry Gray, 1st Duke of Kent . They had three children together:

After his first wife died in 1780, he married Mary Boughton, sister of Sir Edward Boughton, 8th Baronet (around 1742-1794) on March 31, 1782. The marriage remained childless.
