John Elphinstone, 4th Lord Balmerinoch
John Elphinstone, 4th Lord Balmerinoch (born December 26, 1652 in Edinburgh , † May 13, 1736 in Leith ) was a Scottish - British peer and politician .
Life
He was the oldest and only surviving son of John Elphinstone, 3rd Lord Balmerinoch (1632-1704) from his marriage to Lady Margaret Campbell († 1665), daughter of John Campbell, 1st Earl of Loudoun .
In 1687 he was accepted into the Scottish Privy Council . In 1704, on the death of his father, he inherited his Scottish nobility title as 4th Lord Balmerinoch and 3rd Lord Coupar . Because of this title he was a member of the Scottish Parliament until the Act of Union 1707 . In 1710 he held the office of sheriff of Edinburgh and governor of the Royal Mint in Edinburgh, and in 1711 the office of Commissioner of Chamberlainry and Trade . From 1710 to 1715 he was also a Scottish Representative Peer member of the British House of Lords . In parliament he belonged to the Tory party .
Marriages and offspring
His first marriage was on February 16, 1672, Lady Christian Montgomerie, fourth daughter of Hugh Montgomerie, 7th Earl of Eglinton . With her he had three sons and two daughters:
- James Elphinstone, Master of Balmerinoch (1673 – before 1675);
- Hugh Elphinstone, Master of Balmerinoch (⚔ 1708);
- James Elphinstone, 5th Lord Balmerinoch (1675-1746);
- The Hon. Margaret Elphinstone ⚭ 1692 Sir John Preston of Prestonhill;
- Hon. Jean Elphinstone († 1739) ⚭ 1702 Francis Stuart, 7th Earl of Moray († 1739).
After the death of his first wife, he married Ann Rose († 1712), daughter of Most Rev. Arthur Rose, Archbishop of St Andrews, on June 7, 1687 . With her he had two sons and a daughter:
- Arthur Elphinstone, 6th Lord Balmerinoch (1688-1746);
- Hon. Alexander Elphinstone († 1733);
- Hon. Anne Elphinstone.
He died on May 13, 1736 in Leith and was buried in Restalrig on May 17, 1736 . His oldest living son James inherited his title of nobility.
