John Harrington Stevens (born June 13, 1820 in Brompton Falls , Lower Canada (now part of Sherbrooke , Québec ), † May 28, 1900 in Minneapolis , Minnesota ) was an American farmer and politician . He is believed to be the first permanent settler to settle in what is now the city of Minneapolis, and the city's founder.

Life

Stevens was born in the then British colony of Lower Canada. He joined the US Army and fought in the Mexican-American War . In 1849 Stevens settled near the military fortress Fort Snelling and acquired the land on condition that a ferry connection between the settlement and the city of St. Anthony on the other side of the Mississippi River be established. The position of the house built by Stevens has been changed several times, since 1896 it has been in Minnehaha Park in south Minneapolis.

John H. Stevens served in the Minnesota House of Representatives in 1857 and 1858, and in the state Senate in 1859 and 1860 . In 1862 and 1876 he sat in the Minnesota House of Representatives for one year each. Since the merger of the cities of Minneapolis and St. Anthony in 1872, the John Harrington Stevens House is no longer the oldest house in the city, as the oldest house in St. Anthony was built back in 1848. The building is now a museum.

John H. Stevens was married to Francis Helen Miller from May 10, 1850 and had six children.
