Shepard Sherbell
Shepard Sherbell (born September 12, 1944 in Brooklyn , New York City - † August 3, 2018 in Poughkeepsie , New York ) was an American photographer and journalist .
life and work
Shepard Sherbell tried first as editor of East Side Review , a magazine about contemporary art . The first edition with articles and a. by Allen Ginsberg , William S. Burroughs, and Norman Mailer appeared in February 1966. Due to a lack of funding, Sherbell was unable to publish any further issues of the magazine.
In the following years Sherbell mainly worked as a photographer. He portrayed musical groups including the Beatles , the Rolling Stones , The Who , Badfinger , Deep Purple , Humble Pie and Grand Funk Railroad . He made also individual portraits of musicians, including Jimi Hendrix , Cat Stevens , the Rolling Stones- guitarist Brian Jones , of The-WHO drummer Keith Moon and singer of The Four Seasons , Frankie Valli . He also designed numerous record covers and portrayed well-known artists such as Salvador Dali .

On September 1, 1967, Sherbell traveled to Amsterdam with Brian Jones and the photographer Michael Cooper to attend a performance by the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in the Concertgebouw . Sherbell, Jones and Cooper then followed the Maharishi to Bremen , where the Maharishi attended the academy he founded for personality development and held meditation exercises. In the late 1960s, Sherbell lived in London .
In the early 1970s, Sherbell spent some time in California and was involved with the local music scene. In the mid-1970s, Sherbell moved to Washington and worked as a photojournalist. He was the chief photographer for several issues of the magazine The Almanac of American Politics ( Almanac of American politics) and for party days of the Democrats and Republicans . Sherbell traveled extensively and covered various countries such as Grenada , Haiti , Ukraine , Lithuania , Moldova , Libya , Uzbekistan , Afghanistan and Iran .
Sherbell lived in Russia from 1991 to 1993 and authored an illustrated book entitled Soviets: Pictures from the End of the USSR , published in 2001 by Yale University Press. At the time of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks , Sherbell was living in Manhattan near the World Trade Center . The photos he took that day were published worldwide.
Shepard Sherbell died of acute heart failure in 2018 at the age of 73 . He had two sisters, was married and divorced twice, and had no children. From 1965 to 1967 he was married to the writer Diane Wakoski .
