John James Hayes (born November 2, 1973 in Cappamore , County Limerick ) is an Irish rugby union player who plays on the position of the pillar . He is active for the Munster region and the Irish national team .

Hayes didn't start playing rugby until he was 18. He first played as a winger for Club Bruff RFC and spent a few months in New Zealand , where he established himself as a pillar.

Hayes made his debut for Ireland against Scotland in 2000 . It was used in all games at the 2003 World Championships and when winning the Triple Crown at the Six Nations in 2004 . Later that season he was nominated for the British and Irish Lions , where he came to a use against Argentina .

With the Irish province of Munster, Hayes has won the Heineken Cup twice, in 2006 and 2008 . He broke the Irish Pillar international record in 2006 when he made his 60th international appearance at the Six Nations . He still belongs to the regular formation of Ireland. He played in all games at the 2007 World Cup and the 2008 Six Nations .

At the Six Nations 2009 the Irish reached the second Grand Slam after 1948 , Hayes was used in all games. It was after the injury of Euan Murray in the squad of the British and Irish Lions for their tour of South Africa appointed. He was substituted on in the last game of the series against South Africa.
