John J. Legere (born June 4, 1958 in Fitchburg , Massachusetts) is an American businessman and was CEO of T-Mobile US , a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom , until March 30, 2020 .

Career

Legere attended the local St. Katharine Catholic School and then aspired to work as a physical education teacher before he decided to study business administration. He holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts , a master's degree as an Alfred P. Sloan Fellow from the MIT Sloan School of Management, and an MBA from Fairleigh Dickinson University . He also completed the Management Development (PMD) program at Harvard Business School .

Legere first worked in telecommunications at New England Telephone before moving to AT&T , where he held various management positions from 1983 to 1998. Among other things, he was Chief Executive Officer of AT&T Asia, Head of AT&T Global Strategy and Business Development and President of AT & T's global outsourcing subsidiary, AT&T Solutions. From 1998 to 2000 he was Senior Vice President of Dell . He was President and Chief Operations Officer for Dell Operations in Europe, Middle East and Africa and President of Dell Asia-Pacific. He then moved to Asia Global Crossing as President and CEO from 2000 to 2002 and was CEO of Global Crossing from 2001 to 2011 . He led the company through bankruptcy and eventually handled the takeover by Level 3 Communications .

Legere was appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of T-Mobile USA (now T-Mobile US) in September 2012 and has since been known for T-Mobile USA's “un-carrier” approach.

Legere is part of the supervisory board of the American trade association CTIA (Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association). He has served on the corporate advisory board of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology School of Business and Management and the Government Relations Committee of the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong.

Private life

Legere has been a runner since he was a student and still takes part in events with colleagues. In 2004, he completed the Boston Marathon as a member of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's Marathon Challenge team . In May 2016, he bought advertising space for T-Mobile on the runner Nick Symmonds .

Legere has been divorced twice and has two daughters.
