John Killick

Sir John Edward Killick , GCMG (born November 18, 1919 - February 12, 2004 ) was a British diplomat who was ambassador to the Soviet Union between 1971 and 1973 and permanent representative of the United Kingdom to NATO from 1975 to 1979 .

Life

After attending the Latymer Upper School founded in 1624, John Edward Killick, son of Edward William James Killick and his wife Doris Marjorie Stokes, studied at University College London (UCL) and the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . During the Second World War, he did his military service in the Suffolk Regiment and later in the 1st Airborne Division ( 1st Airborne Division ) . As head of the 89th Field Security Section belonging to the Intelligence Corps , he took part in Operation Market Garden (September 17 to 27, 1944) near Arnhem , where he was taken prisoner by Germany . After his liberation in 1945, he stayed in Germany and was temporarily the commander of an intelligence unit in Siegen .

After his return joined Killick 1946 in the diplomatic service (HM Diplomatic Service) Ministry of Foreign Affairs ( Foreign Office ) and found in the following years many different uses of foreign missions and the Foreign Ministry. After a 1962 to 1963 completed course at the Imperial Defense College in London he was 1963-1968 Counselor and head of the firm at the embassy in the United States . For his services there he was named Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) in 1966 . On his return he was nunmehrigen Ministry of Foreign Affairs and affairs of the Commonwealth of Nations (Foreign and Commonwealth Office) from 1968 to 1970 first of assistive Undersecretary of State for European Economic Integration (Assistant Under-Secretary for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (European Economic Integration)) and then from 1970 to 1971 Assistant Under-Secretary for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (Defense, Intelligence and Planning) . He was beaten on June 12, 1971 to Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG), so that from then on he carried the suffix "Sir".

As the successor to Duncan Wilson , Sir John Killick became ambassador to the Soviet Union in 1971 and held this position until 1973, when Terence Garvey succeeded him there. He then returned to the Foreign Office, where he was Deputy Under-Secretary for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (Europe) between 1973 and 1975 . Most recently he replaced Edward Peck as Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom to NATO in 1975 . He remained in this position until he retired in 1979 and was then replaced by Clive Rose . On June 16, 1979 he was raised to the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George (GCMG). After retiring from active service, he was director of tire manufacturer Dunlop South Africa from 1980 to 1985 .
