John Knight Fotheringham

John Knight Fotheringham (born August 14, 1874 in Tottenham , Middlesex , † December 12, 1936 in Cumnor Hill near Oxford ) was a British historian specializing in ancient astronomy and chronology . He established the chronology of the Babylonian rulers.

Life

John Fotheringham went through the City of London School and Merton College , Oxford , where he received an academic distinction ('exhibition') and top grades in Classical Philology ('Literae Humaniores') and Modern History (1896/97). From 1898 to 1902 he held a kind of assistant professorship ('demyship') at Magdalen College . It was then that he began to study ancient chronology. In 1904 he was appointed lecturer in Classical Antiquity at King's College London , where he taught until 1915.

Fotheringham was a fellow at Magdalen College (1909-1916). He read on ancient history at the University of London (1912–1920). He later gave lectures on ancient astronomy and chronology at the University of Oxford (1925–1936).

In 1923 he published Hieronymus 'version of Eusebius ' Chronicles. In 1933 he became a member of the British Academy . He was also a member of the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS).
