John Learmont

John Hartley Learmont , KCB , CBE (born March 10, 1934 ) is a former British officer in the British Army , who last served as a general between 1991 and 1994 as Quartermaster-General to the Forces .

Life

Officer training and military uses

John Hartley Learmont graduated after school officer training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) and was on 12 February 1954 as a lieutenant (Second Lieutenant) in the Royal Artillery of the British Army adopted. In the following years he found numerous uses and was used as a lieutenant colonel (Lieutenant-Colonel) of the Royal Horse Artillery in Northern Ireland . For his services during the Northern Ireland conflict during the period from May 1 to July 31, 1974, he was mentioned in the war report ( Mentioned in dispatches ) . AsBrigadier General (Brigadier) he was in December 1978 commander of the 8th Field Force (8th Field Force) and remained in this use until December 1980. From July 1982 to 1984 he was chief of the British military liaison mission with the Soviet Army in Europe . On August 12, 1982, his vehicle was rammed sideways in front of a radar station near Quedlinburg by an NVA vehicle shooting out of the gate and pushed against a tree.

After his return he was from February 1985 to February 1987 commander of the artillery units of the I. Corps ( I Corps ) . At the same time, he was on 23 February 1985, the provisional rank of Major General (Major-General) awarded. On March 11, 1987 he was appointed Chief of Staff at the Headquarters of the Land Forces (United Kingdom Land Forces) . He remained in this post until February 1988. On April 11, 1988, he became commandant of Staff College Camberley, succeeding Major General John Waters . He held this post until March 1989, when Major General Jeremy Mackenzie succeeded him there. On August 1, 1988, he took over the honorary post of General Martin Farndale as Colonel Commandant of the Army Air Corps .

Promotion to general

April 12, 1989 John Learmont was appointed Lieutenant General (Lieutenant General) promoted and at the same time, succeeding Lieutenant General Patrick Palmer for Military Secretary (Military Secretary) appointed. As such, he was responsible for the policy of personnel management in the British Army until his replacement by Lieutenant General William Rous in October 1991. During this time he was beaten on June 17, 1989 to Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB), so that from then on he carried the suffix "Sir". He also took over on August 15, 1990 the post of honor as Colonel Commandant of the Royal Horse Artillery .

Most recently, he took over the post of Quartermaster-General to the Forces from General Edward Jones in December 1991 and exercised this position until April 1994, after which General William Rous again became his successor there. At the same time he was awarded the rank of general on December 2, 1991 . On June 13, 1994, he retired.
