John Linthicum

John Charles Linthicum (born December 2, 1948 in Clearwater , Florida , † April 4, 2008 in Arizona ) was an American writer who lived and worked in Germany for a long time.

Life

John Linthicum studied from 1965 to 1969 at universities in Munich , Paris and Baltimore . From 1969 to 1973 he stayed on Mallorca , from 1973 to 1980 he was a lecturer in poetics and creative writing in California . From 1975 to 1979 he was in charge of a poetry program for a radio station in San Diego . In 1980 he went to Europe again and stayed in the Federal Republic ; from 1982 he lived in Düsseldorf .

In Dusseldorf Linthicum was the now German spoke and wrote to a prominent figure of the city's literary scene by the organized by him especially awareness poetry readings obtained in "Poetry Café". From 1988 he moderated the poetry program "Dichter yesterday and today" for Westdeutscher Rundfunk and from 1990 the program "Poetry spotlight" for Deutsche Welle . From 1994 to 1997 he headed the Düsseldorf literature office. Towards the end of the 1990s, Linthicum, who was suffering from a serious lung disease, withdrew more and more from the public. Most recently he lived in the United States.

John Linthicum was the author of poetry and short prose in English and German ; there are also translations from German into English.

John Linthicum was a member of the Association of German Writers . In 1986 he received a work grant from the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Charles Angoff Award, and in 1989 a residence grant from the artist village of Schöppingen .
