John M. Gillette

John Morris Gillette (born August 9, 1866 near Maryville , Missouri , † September 24, 1949 in Grand Forks ) was an American theologian and sociologist .

Gillette earned an MA from Princeton University in 1895 and received her PhD from the University of Chicago in 1899 . After ordination in the Presbyterian Church , he served as a minister in Dodge City , Kansas, and a teacher in Chadron , Nebraska , Jacksonville, Illinois, and Valley City, North Dakota . From 1907 until his retirement in 1948 he taught as a professor of sociology at the University of North Dakota . In 1928 he was president of the American Sociological Society .

Gillette is considered one of the founders and major representatives of the American Country Sociology ( rural sociology ).
