John Mackey (Bishop)

John Mackey CBE (born January 11, 1918 in Bray , Ireland , † January 20, 2014 in Auckland , New Zealand ) was Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland .

Life

John Mackey moved to New Zealand from Ireland with his widowed mother at the age of seven; they lived with his uncle O'Byrne, a Catholic clergyman.

He studied philosophy and theology at New Zealand's national seminary at Holy Cross College in Mosgiel and was ordained a priest on November 23, 1941 . He completed a master's degree in church history and received a doctorate in education. He held a Fulbright Scholarship and a Graduate Scholarship from the US University of Notre Dame . Mackey was the long-time director of education for the Diocese of Auckland.

On April 25, 1974, Pope Paul VI appointed him . Bishop of Auckland and ordained him episcopal on June 30, 1974 in Rome ; Co-consecrators were the Curia Archbishops Giovanni Benelli and Duraisamy Simon Lourdusamy .

He was Professor of Church History at Holy Cross College , New Zealand's National Seminary and the University of Otago . He was particularly concerned with the history of education and training in New Zealand. In 1975 he was able to successfully integrate the Catholic school system into the New Zealand school system.

On January 1, 1983, Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation for health reasons. In the years that followed, Mackey continued to serve as a professor and guest speaker. He died in January 2014 after a brief illness at the age of 96.
