John Marshall Martin
John Marshall Martin (born March 18, 1832 in Edgefield County , South Carolina , † August 10, 1921 in Ocala , Florida ) was a Confederate officer and politician. He served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War . Martin initially held the rank of captain in the light artillery and later a colonel in the 9th Florida Regiment . He was one of the troops of General Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) who surrendered on April 9, 1865 before the troops of the Northern States under Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant at the Appomattox Court House . Martin was also politically active at the time. He was elected to the first Confederate Congress in a by-election in 1863 to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of James Baird Dawkins (1809-1889) on December 8, 1862. He served there until 1864. After his death, he was buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Ocala.
