John E. McAlle (born January 31, 1950 in Liverpool ) is a former English football player . As a central defender , he was active for many years for Wolverhampton Wanderers and is one of only six players who played more than 500 competitive games for the "Wolves".

Athletic career

In July 1965, " Scouse ", as John McAlle was later called by his teammates in view of his Liverpool origins, joined the youth department of Wolverhampton Wanderers . After receiving his first professional contract in February 1967, he played the majority of the games for the reserve team and made his debut in the "first team" on April 29, 1968 in the 1-0 defeat by Chelsea . However, he only became part of the professional squad in the 1970/71 season when he replaced John Holsgrove and formed the new central defense with Frank Munro . He quickly made a name for himself due to his strength in a duel and physical presence, although he did not take part in the offensive game and seldom left his own half.

The first successes were not long in coming and after winning the Texaco Cup in 1971 he was a regular player in the team that reached the final in the 1971/72 season in the UEFA Cup and was defeated by Tottenham Hotspur . After two more years, winning the league cup was the next milestone and after relegating to the Second Division , he led his team straight back to the English elite class as second division champions. With the arrival of European Cup winner Emlyn Hughes , McAlle found himself often on the bench from 1979 onwards and the majority only made substitutions. In addition, he broke a leg in the game against Watford FC in February 1980 , only returned to the team eleven months later and was never again the player with the previously demonstrated quality. In August 1981, his long relationship with the Wolves ended after he was denied another contract extension. Instead, he moved to Sheffield United after a total of 508 competitive games for 10,000 pounds .

For the club at Bramall Lane , he completed 18 games, won the fourth division championship and moved on to Derby County . There he played again for almost two years in the second division and was in March 1984 against FC Barnsley for the last time in a professional game on the field. He then let his active career fade away at the Wolverhampton-based amateur club Harrisons FC. After finishing his sporting career, he worked as a landscape gardener and now lives as a pensioner in Brewood in the South Staffordshire district .
