John McCarthy Jr.

John McCarthy Jr. (born June 1, 1912 in California , † January 14, 1994 in San Bernardino , California) was an American production designer who worked on over 500 film and television sets.

Career

Born in California in 1912, McCarthy worked as a decorator in the western His Fighting Blood in 1935 . Other films followed, and in 1953 he and his colleagues Frank Hotaling and Charles S. Thompson received his first Oscar nomination in the category of best production design (color film) for the film The Winner . At the Academy Awards 1967 he received another nomination in this category, along with Alexander Golitzen , George C. Webb and John P. Austin , for his work on the film The Girl from the Cherry Bar, with Shirley MacLaine in the lead role. After further work, McCarthy was also nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for The Love Boat in 1979 . In 1980 McCarthy Jr. retired and no longer worked as a production designer.

John McCarthy died in San Bernardino, California at the age of 81.
