John Meillon

John Meillon OBE (born May 1, 1934 in Mosman , Sydney , † August 11, 1989 in Mosman ) was an Australian actor .

Life

John Meillon began his artistic career at the age of eleven on the ABC radio series Stumpy . He made his first stage experience the following year. At the age of 16, he joined the Shakespeare Touring Company . Like many actors of his generation, he went to England between 1959 and 1965 .

From an early age he was often seen in internationally important films, including Stanley Kramer's The Last Shore ( On the Beach , 1959), Fred Zinnemann's The Endless Horizon ( The Sundowners , 1960) and Walkabout (1971) by Nicolas Roeg . All of these films were set in Australia. His best-known appearance worldwide was as Walter Reilly alongside the leading actors Paul Hogan and Linda Kozlowski in the hit Australian comedy Crocodile Dundee - A Crocodile to Kiss from 1986.

In 1979 he was awarded the title of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services to the theater of Queen Elizabeth II .

John Meillon was married to June Salter between 1958 and 1971. The Australian actor John Meillon Jr. comes from this marriage . In 1972 he married Rita Gibson, with whom he also has a son. In 1989 he died of liver disease at the age of 55.
