John Nicolson (born June 23, 1961 in Glasgow ) is a Scottish politician , presenter and reporter.

Life

Born in Glasgow, Nicolson studied at the University of Glasgow . He was a member of the University Debating Club and won both the Scottish Debating Championships and the 1983 World Universities Debating Championship . After completing his master's degree , Nicolson won both Kennedy and Harkness scholarships to study at Harvard University . The Democratic Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan hired Nicolson as a speechwriter.

Nicolson returned home and worked for the BBC . There he acted as a political correspondent in London and reporter in Panorama , Newsnight and Public Eye, among others . Nicolson later hosted breakfast television and was spokesman for the BBC news magazine at the start of the 9/11 2011 attacks .

Political career

In the British general election in 2015 , Nicolson ran for the SNP in the constituency of East Dunbartonshire . He stood against the Liberal Democrat Jo Swinson , who represented the constituency in the British House of Commons since its introduction in 2005 . After the SNP gained massive votes in these elections, Nicolson achieved the highest percentage of votes with 40.3% and subsequently moved into the House of Commons for the first time. There he was a member of the committee for culture, media and sport. With a loss of votes, Nicolson lost his mandate in the early general election in 2017 and subsequently left parliament.
