Gerd Däumel

Gerd Däumel (born January 8, 1913 in Neustadt an der Orla ; † November 1, 2011 ) was a German gardener and professor of horticulture and landscaping .

Life

After receiving his secondary school leaving certificate, Gerd Däumel completed an apprenticeship as a gardener between 1930 and 1933 . Then in 1934 he began studying technology in Bad Köstritz with a focus on garden, park and cemetery design. He finished this course in 1936 with the subject-related higher education entrance qualification . Until 1939 he worked as a garden technician in the Ruhr area and served . After the beginning of the Second World War , Däumel was used in West Germany , Norway , France and Russia . In 1942 and 1943 he was given study leave and attended the Humboldt University in Berlin . After the end of the Second World War, he was taken prisoner by the Soviets and released on July 24, 1947. Between 1947 and 1948 he continued to study land maintenance at the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz University in Hanover . On May 16, 1950, he passed his diploma examination to become a qualified engineer in rural maintenance. He wrote his diploma thesis in the field of landscape and garden design. His work was entitled Processing the Leinetal south of the Maschsee near Hanover .

From 1951 to 1953 he worked as a freelancer for a landscape architect in Dortmund. There he was responsible for the planning orders.

In 1960 he obtained his doctorate in horticulture under Heinrich Wiepking-Jürgensmann at the University of Hanover (Dr. rer. Hort.). His dissertation was entitled On Land Beautification in the First Half of the 19th Century . In the same year he became a professor at the teaching and research institute for wine, fruit growing and horticulture at the Geisenheim research institute . In 1968 he became an examiner for state maintenance at the higher examination office for the higher technical administrative officials of the states and municipalities.

Däumel was appointed professor at the Justus Liebig University in Gießen in 1972 ; there he taught landscape maintenance. In 1974 he also received a teaching position for landscape and green space planning.

In 1978 he stopped teaching and retired .

Gerd Däumel was married to Irmela Däumel. He died on November 1, 2011 and was on November 11 at the cemetery in Geisenheim buried .

Däumel worked as a professor in numerous subjects. This included: design, garden architecture, history of garden art, representation technology and art history. He researched mainly on the focus of landscape aesthetics and landscape maintenance. There he dealt with land consolidation and drew attention to its negative consequences for the landscape.

Another focus of his work was the material concrete for the design of gardens. So he created paths, terraces, pergolas, stairs, privacy walls and small structures made of concrete.

He shaped the Villa Monrepos and the adjacent park through his planning and new construction. He carried out these measures between 1954 and 1972.

Memberships

Since 1953 he has been a member of the Association of German Landscape Architects . A year later he became head of the Institute for Garden and Landscape Design at the Geisenheim Research Station. In 1955 he was appointed garden councilor. In 1957 he became a member of the working group of landscape lawyers. Between 1970 and 197 he chaired the working group. Since 1958 he was a member of the German Dendrological Society . From 1961 to 1973 he was also its vice-president.

In 1970 he became a member of the training committee of the Chamber of Architects in Hessen. In the same year he was appointed to the working group for regional development in Bonn . He left this working group in 1973; the training committee 1974.
