John Bockris
Bernhardt Patrick John O'Mara Bockris (born January 5, 1923 in Johannesburg , South Africa; † July 7, 2013 in Gainesville , Florida ) was a professor of chemistry who dealt primarily with physical chemistry and especially electrochemistry . He has co-authored over 700 scientific publications, including over 20 books. He is best known for his textbooks on modern electrochemistry and as an early advocate of a hydrogen economy. In later years he supported work on cold fusion , for which he was heavily criticized.
Life
Bockris was employed from 1943 at Imperial College London , where he received his doctorate from Harold JT Ellingham (1897-1975) in 1945 and then worked as a lecturer and group leader. He is one of the co-founders of CITCE, the forerunner of the International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE). Bockris was professor of chemistry from 1953 to 1972 at the University of Pennsylvania , then at Flinders University in Adelaide and from 1978 until his retirement in 1997 professor of chemistry at Texas A&M University .
