Sir John Paul Getty II KBE (born September 7, 1932 in Los Angeles , † April 17, 2003 in London ) was a British-American billionaire and philanthropist .

John Paul Getty II was born the third of five sons of oil tycoon Jean Paul Getty (1892-1976) and his fourth wife Ann Rork.

After studying in San Francisco , he took over the management of Getty Oil in Rome . After six years he left the company again and made a name for himself with his extravagant party life and drug use.

Getty, a native American whose family made billions in the oil business, donated $ 183 million to charity. For his charitable achievements, he, who was considered the black sheep of the Getty clan and who took British citizenship in 1997, was honored in 1986 with the accolade of British Queen Elizabeth II . His passion for books, which he has been collecting since his youth, he manifested in a library building , the Wormsley Library, right next to his last residence, Wormsley House in Stokenchurch . He was a member of the Roxburghe Club .

After Getty's death in 2003, the J. Paul Getty Jr. Charitable Trust was established to manage Getty's estate . Antiques dealer Christopher Gibbs became one of the presidents and was instrumental in Getty donating £ 50 million to London's National Gallery in 1985 .

In his first marriage (1956-1964) he was married to Gail Harris. There are four children from the marriage.

In his second marriage (1966–1971) he was married to the Dutch model Talitha Pol (1940–1971).
