John Raymond

John Raymond (born November 19, 1985 ) is an American jazz musician ( flugelhorn , trumpet , composition ) and university professor.

Raymond, who is from Minneapolis , studied music at the University of Wisconsin in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Music in Performance. He then moved to New York City in 2008 to do a master's degree in jazz at SUNY Purchase College . He also played in the local jazz scene with musicians such as Billy Hart , Orrin Evans , Kurt Rosenwinkel , Dan Tepfer and Linda May Han Oh . In 2011, Raymond self-published his Jon Faddis- produced debut album Strength & Song ; Foreign Territory ( Fresh Sound New Talent ) was created in 2014 , with Dan Tepfer, Joe Martin and Billy Hart. In his following own projects he worked with the guitarist Gilad Hekselman ; this resulted in the trio Real Feels (with Colin Stranahan , drums) based on the model of the formations of Jim Hall and Art Farmer or of Ron Miles , Bill Frisell and Brian Blade . After a self-titled album in 2016, the live album Real Feels: Live, Vol. 1 , was released in 2018 by the studio production Joy Ride ( Sunnyside Records ). In the field of jazz he was involved in six recording sessions between 2011 and 2017.

Since 2017 he has been teaching as an Assistant Professor at Indiana University Bloomington (Jacobs School of Music).

Prizes and awards

Raymond was a finalist in the National Trumpet Competition in 2009 . At the Down Beat Critics Poll in 2017 he was awarded in the category Rising Star Trumpeter .
