John Rayner Edmands (born February 18, 1850 in Boston , Massachusetts , † March 27, 1910 in Baltimore , Maryland ) was an American astronomer , librarian and mountain hiker .

Life

Edmands was one of the first students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (graduated in 1869) and worked first as a civil engineer , then as a geodesist and finally for the Harvard College observatory , since 1883 as a librarian.

In his spare time, Edmands spent a lot of time in the White Mountains of New Hampshire , where he made great contributions to the construction of hiking trails, shelters and marker points. His Edmands Path on Mount Eisenhower is particularly well known . Edmands was one of the founders of the Appalachian Mountain Club .

In 1880 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Since 1885 Edmands was married to Helen Louisa Atkins (* 1857), who died in 1888 while giving birth to their daughter. John Rayner Edmands died in 1910 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore of complications from a stroke. His grave is in Mount Auburn Cemetery .
