John Richard Garland
John "Jack" Richard Garland PC (born January 1, 1918 in Smiths Falls , † March 14, 1964 ) was a Canadian journalist , business manager , entrepreneur and politician of the Liberal Party of Canada , who was a member of the House of Commons for several years and a minister for some time.
Life
Garland, who was a journalist, business manager and entrepreneur by profession, began his political career in local politics and served between 1947 and 1949 as an alderman ( Alderman ) of North Bay . In the general election of June 27, 1949, he was elected as a candidate for the Liberal Party for the first time as a member of the lower house and represented the constituency of Nipissing for more than 14 years until his death on March 14, 1964 .
On April 22, 1963 Prime Minister Lester Pearson appointed him Minister for National Income in Canada's 19th Cabinet , of which he was a member until his death on March 14, 1964.
It was in honor of Jack Garland Airport in North Bay named.
