John Saul (born February 25, 1942 in Pasadena , California ) is an American writer and author of horror novels and psychological thrillers .
Life
John Saul was born in Pasadena, grew up in Whittier , studied anthropology , theater studies and literature , among other things , at various universities after graduating from high school , but remained without a degree. As a college dropout, he saw his future in a career as a writer, but initially lived off a casual job for 15 years and wrote detective novels at night , for which, however, he could not find a publisher. His literary breakthrough came with his first horror novel Suffer the Children , which appeared in 1977 and, thanks to a TV campaign, conquered the bestseller lists in just a few weeks. The novel was published by Heyne Verlag in 1977 under the German title Wehe, if they wiederkehren . Since then, John Saul, who doesn't read horror novels himself, has been one of the most successful representatives of contemporary horror literature alongside Stephen King and Dean Koontz . The total circulation of his books is over 50 million; his works have been translated into 25 languages.
His novel Cry for the Strangers was filmed in 1982 under the direction of Peter Medak and with Patrick Duffy and Cindy Pickett in the lead roles. A computer game of the same name is based on his six-volume sequel series The Blackstone Chronicles , for which he was inspired by Stephen King's serial novel The Green Mile , which was released in 1998 by Red Orb Entertainment and was also very successful in Germany.
Today John Saul lives in Bellevue, Washington state . He loves traveling in his RV and enjoys playing golf. He also spends part of his time in Seattle and the San Juan Islands . He also has a vacation home in Hawaii .
