John Tarleton (born March 6, 1719 in Liverpool , † September 1, 1773 ibid) was a British merchant and mayor of Liverpool.

Life

Tarleton was the son of the merchant Thomas Tarleton and thus a great-grandson of the English merchant Edward Tarleton . He followed in his father's footsteps and also became a businessman . His main focus was on Africa and the West Indies . With the growing demand for labor in the sugar cane cultivation, Tarleton became the owner of several slave ships , including the Swan , the Tarleton in the 1750s, and the John in the 1760s. During the 1750s he dealt mainly with the Leeward Islands , especially Antigua . After the Seven Years' War he expanded his activities in Jamaica .

Between 1748 and 1773, Tarleton's estimated net worth rose from £ 6,000 to about £ 80,000 . While in the 1750s his fortune consisted mainly of ships and goods such as sugar cane, at the time of his death he owned a third of his land in the Caribbean , but also in England , where he bought Aigburth Hall , the old family home of his ancestors, around 1770 Assets. It is thanks to its economic success that the Tarletons rose to become one of the most respected Liverpool merchant families in the second half of the 18th century.

In keeping with this role, Tarleton was councilor on Liverpool city council and held the office of mayor of the city from 1764 to 1765. His great-grandfather and his son Edward had already performed this function in the past . In 1767 he was asked by some of the city's most influential merchants to run for a seat in the House of Commons for the Liverpool constituency. Tarleton refused, however.

On June 25, 1751 he married Jane Parker († May 23, 1797). The marriage had five sons, including Banastre , John and Clayton Tarleton , and a daughter. British Admiral John Walter Tarleton is a grandson of his son Thomas.
