John William Murphy (born April 26, 1902 in Avoca , Luzerne County , Pennsylvania , †  March 28, 1962 in Scranton , Pennsylvania) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1943 and 1946 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives ; then he became a federal judge .

Career

John Murphy attended the public schools of his home country and then until 1926 the Wharton School affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania . After a subsequent law degree at the same university and his admission as a lawyer in 1929, he began to work in Scranton in this profession. Between 1934 and 1941 he was the assistant prosecutor in Lackawanna County . Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party .

In the 1942 congressional election , Murphy was elected to the Eleventh constituency of Pennsylvania to the House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Veronica Grace Boland on January 3, 1943 . After a re-election in the tenth district of his state, he could remain in Congress until his resignation on July 17, 1946 . During this time the Second World War ended .

John Murphy's resignation came after his appointment as a federal district court judge for the central part of the state of Pennsylvania. Since 1955 he was presiding judge there. He held this office until his death on March 28, 1962. He had four children with his wife Ella Heffron.
