John Washington Baird

John Washington Baird ( February 22, 1852 , † 1923 ) was an American chess player and one of the referees in the fight for the World Chess Championship in 1894 between Wilhelm Steinitz and Emanuel Lasker .

He lived in New York and was one of the co-founders of the Manhattan Chess Club with his younger brother David Graham Baird (1854–1913) .

He took part in the 6th championship of the USA in New York in 1889, but finished there with 7 points from 38 rounds only the 19th and penultimate place. At a championship tournament in New York in 1893, which was won by Harry Nelson Pillsbury , Baird came in fifth with 4.5 points from 9 games. In 1895 he played in a team match between the USA and Great Britain held by telegraph on board 8 and scored a draw against HW Trenchard. He also played in two championship tournaments in Germany: At the DSB Congress in Leipzig in 1894 he was twelfth (7.5 points from 17 games), in the B tournament in Barmen 1905 he came in 17th (3.5 points from 17 games) .

His best historical rating was 2556, which he achieved in August 1895.
