Johnny Alegre

Johnny Alegre (born June 4, 1955 in Manila as Juan Bautista H. Alegre III. ) Is a Filipino jazz musician ( guitar , composition ). He leads the jazz group Johnny Alegre Affinity and the world music group Humanfolk .

Live and act

Alegre studied composition at the University of the Philippines with Francisco Feliciano in the late 1970s . He took part in workshops by composer Erhard Karkoschka , guitarist Ike Isaacs and composer Chou Wen-chung . He was a founding member of the UP Jazz Ensemble.

Alegre was active in the Filipino scene in a variety of bands and record projects, initially primarily in Pinoy Rock and Original Philippine Music (OPM) , but also as a producer for Tadao Hayashi before he became involved in jazz. In 2002 Alegre founded the Johnny Alegre Affinity with bassist Colby de la Calzada, drummer Koko Bermejo, pianist Elhmir Saison and saxophonist Tots Tolentino. The title Stones of Intramuros , written by Alegre, was included in the Filipino jazz anthology Adobo Jazz Vol. 1 . The self-titled album Johnny Alegre Affinity was released in the Philippines in mid-2005 and re -released as a Jazzhound in 2007 for worldwide distribution on the British Candid label . Appearances in London and Hollywood followed.

In the following years Alegre worked with his Affinity on Eastern Skies , an album of his own compositions, which was recorded with the Global Studio Orchestra under the direction of Gerard Salonga. In 2009 MCA released Johnny Alegre 3 , a New York-recorded trio album with Ron McClure and Billy Hart . Alegre was the first musician from the Philippines to be signed to MCA.

In 2008 Alegre recorded the album Humanfolk , which was released in 2011, with a band oriented towards the world music idiom, which he had founded with percussionist Susie Ibarra , drummer Roberto Juan Rodriguez, Cynthia Alexander and Malek Lopez .
