Johannes Herbert (Johnny) Bruck (born March 22, 1921 in Halle (Saale) ; † October 6, 1995 ) was a German draftsman . Bruck signed his pictures with Willis , J. Plasterer , J. Plaster , Jo Shot and Johnny Crash, among others .

Life

Johnny Bruck grew up in Halle on the Saale. Between 1936 and 1938 he learned the profession of photolithograph . In 1938 he reported to the Navy and, after his ship had been sunk, met the draftsman Hans Liska in the hospital . He was sentenced to death as a deserter because he overran his home leave by ten hours; the sentence was not carried out because the Second World War ended shortly afterwards . Felix Graf Luckner obtained his early release from British captivity.

He then lived in Hamburg, where he married his first wife. In autumn 1945 they moved to Goslar / Harz, where their two children, Gerd (1947) and Verena (1949) were born. Then Bruck drew various covers for magazine series and worked as a journalist for the Hannoversche Presse , the Braunschweigsche and the Goslarsche Zeitung . He first drew his pictures for Uta-Verlag and then for Pabel-Verlag . At Pabel he drew for the Utopia series, among other things .

Eventually he became an employee of Arthur Moewig-Verlag , where, as far as is known, he made all the exterior and interior illustrations of the novel series of soldiers' stories from all over the world . At Moewig he painted the cover picture of the first volume in the science fiction series Terra . In 1959 he moved to Munich, the headquarters of the publishing house. In 1961 he drew the first cover picture of the Perry Rhodan series that has just been created . Until his death in 1797 he drew cover pictures for the Perry Rhodan series, 218 cover pictures for the paperbacks of the series as well as various cover pictures and interior illustrations for other products in the Perry Rhodan universe (including the Atlan series).

Bruck's retrofuturistic representations, influenced by the spirit of the times, achieved cult status at an early stage. Bruck continuously changed his style up to photorealism. His collage-like representations often contain quotations, and he occasionally used surrealists.

He died on October 6, 1995 of the consequences of a motorcycle accident when he had an accident with his scooter in Herrsching am Ammersee without a helmet.
