Johnny Windhurst
John Henry "Johnny" Windhurst (born November 5, 1926 in New York City , † October 2, 1981 in Poughkeepsie , New York ) was an American jazz trumpeter .
Live and act
Windhurst learned to play the trumpet by himself , influenced by the music of Bix Beiderbeckes . He became known in 1945 when Sidney Bechet put together a band for a longer engagement in the Savoy Café in Boston ; After a few weeks he replaced the veteran Bunk Johnson who was initially employed by the young trumpeter. Windhurst then played with Art Hodes and James P. Johnson at a Town Hall concert in September 1946. He worked in Chicago for a while, then moved to California, where he played at Edmond Hall and with Stan Hasselgård ; he also worked with Louis Armstrong and Nappy Lamare . In Ohio and Boston he led his own formation; He also worked with Eddie Condon in the early 1950s . In 1952/53 he worked on recordings of Ruby Braff , later on recordings by Barbara Lea (1955–57), Jack Teagarden (1955) and Lee Wiley . In 1956 he recorded the album Jazz at Columbus Avenue under his own name for the Transition label , with bassist Buell Neidlinger also participating. In the mid-1950s he still worked in Ohio and from 1957 to the early 1960s again in Eddie Condon's Club in New York. Then he played in Poughkeepsie.
