Pauline Sara Jo "Jojo" Moyes (born August 4, 1969 in London ) is a British journalist , writer and screenwriter .

Life

Since her parents were big fans of the Beatles , Jojo Moyes got her first name after the man sung about in the song Get Back , released four months before her birth . She grew up as an only child and divorced child in “a very rough area of ​​London”. After graduating from high school, Moyes worked in several professions before studying sociology at Bedford College and Royal Holloway , both colleges of the University of London . With a scholarship funded by The Independent , she studied journalism at City University London . In 1994 she wrote from Hong Kong for the Sunday Morning Post . She worked for the Independent in various functions for around ten years.

With the novel Sheltering Rain , which appeared in the same year under the German title Die Frauen von Kilcarrion by Rowohlt Verlag , Moyes made her debut as a writer in 2002. In Germany, the book was published by Rowohlt Verlag in March 2013 with an initial print run of 120,000 and became the most successful novel in 2013, with over 1.2 million copies sold. Together with Eine Handvoll Wort ( A Handful of Words) , it sold over two million copies in 2013 in Germany alone. The Hollywood film studio MGM acquired the film rights to A Whole Half Year in January 2013 . The film of the same name was released in June 2016 with a script written by Moyes. Moyes refuses to categorize her works as chick-lit .

Moyes has lived on a small homestead in Saffron Walden , Essex , with her husband and their three children since 2000 .
