Lars Jonas Holger Gardell (born November 2, 1963 in Enebyberg , Danderyd municipality , Sweden ) is a Swedish writer , screenwriter , actor , comedian and singer .

Life

Gardell grew up in Enebyberg north of Stockholm and has two siblings. His parents, both psychologists, whose second youngest child he was, divorced in his childhood. At the age of 18 he applied to an acting school, but when he learned that he would be the 500th auditor to audition for " Hamlet ", he withdrew his application and subsequently tried his hand at an artist. So he opened an art gallery , which, however, had moderate success with the public. He began poems to write, now also stories and novels . In 1985 he published his debut novel Passionsspelet . In 1989 his first play Lena och Percy Präriehund came on stage and he went on tour with the composer Kim Hedås .

In 1995 he wrote the screenplay for his first feature film, Pensionat Oskar . Directed by Susanne Bier . The film is about a family who goes on vacation to the coast. The father falls in love with the campsite guard and leaves his family. Pensionat Oskar won the big critic's award at the Montreal World Film Festival in autumn 1995 , Gardell won the Swedish film award "Guldbagge" for the best manuscript.

Jonas Gardell lives in a registered civil partnership with the Finnish-Swedish author and presenter Mark Levengood . Gardell grew up in a Baptist church and is of Christian faith.

Literary work

Jonas Gardell publishes works in a wide variety of literary genres: novels, short stories, poems, plays and scripts . One of the main themes of his work is dealing with homosexuality and its social acceptance. Gardell's debut novel Passionsspelet, for example, is about the difficulties of being allowed to be the homosexual that you are and of being accepted by others, but also by yourself.

In 1992 he published the novel A Comedian Is Growing Up , which became a successful TV series in Sweden.

Gardell's works have been translated into numerous languages ​​including English, French, German, Russian and various Scandinavian languages. His plays are performed all over Europe.
